Excerpt from Chapter 2

There was only indirect light here, punctuated by an occasional flash from the disco, one deck above. The area, designed for shady relaxation, was filled with rounded basket chairs which hung from the partial roof. The roof went out about half way, leaving the rest to open sky. Kevin chose one of the hanging chairs. Everyone else gravitated to the floor.

Kevin settled in, crossing his legs in the chair. He closed his eyes, slowed his breathing, and dropped his head to his chest. After a few moments, Tommy could see that the time was here. Whoever was channeling through Kevin was clearly present. It was a very anxious time. Tommy had no idea what this new entity coming through Kevin was going to be like. As he watched, Kevin seemed to undergo a metamorphosis. Never before had Tommy seen a channel alter Kevin's facial structure like this. His lips pursed, his eyes seemed to narrow and slant, and his face seemed to become longer. He also uncrossed his legs and placed his feet firmly on the ground.

In a booming voice, Kevin spoke. "Greetings. My name is Ki. Actually, I have no name, for in my state of being names are unnecessary. But, due to the obsessive nature of this species to label things you may call me Ki, for pure energy is how you would perceive me in my natural form." He then turned to Tommy and said, "The vehicle is fine and we found that the heart only stopped briefly upon entering."

"Wonderful, that's reassuring," Tommy replied, dripping in sarcasm.

"I have come to give you messages and information this evening. To each of you I have a message." With this he seemed to look around the circle of people with his eyes still closed. To Tommy's surprise, Ki stood up. Never before had a channel used Kevin's body so completely. In fact, Tommy had never heard of a channel standing and walking. As he rose, Ki began to stagger around like a drunken sailor. Tommy jumped up to help him.

"Most inconvenient vehicles you have here. They are so heavy and awkward, yet it is my understanding that you are very attached to them, is this true?"

"Yes, we find that they suit our purpose." Tommy said to him. Everyone else just sat, stunned, and watched.

"Well, you will have to have . . ." he paused seeming to try and grasp the correct word, "patience with me for I have never traveled in one of these bodies before. Quite . . ." another pause as if searching for the word, "cumbersome." He smiled.

Ki then tried to open Kevin's eyes and seemed unable to do so. "The optical connectors seem to be malfunctioning, can you do something?"

"I don't think so, but if they seem resistant to opening then perhaps you should just keep them closed." Tommy definitely did not like the turn of this conversation. Ki seemed to be very arrogant, and it frightened Tommy that Kevin's body could be so used without his own conscious manipulation.

Ki continued to sway. "I have not found my . . ." he paused, again searching for a word, "sea legs as yet. Please stand by in case of accident."

"OK," said Tommy. "Just be careful." Ki turned to level Tommy with what would have been a withering stare had the eyes been open. Tommy handled it with equanimity, but felt that unless things changed, he was not going to like this entity very much.

"Very well," Ki intoned. "Does anyone have any questions that they would like to ask me before I give you the information which I have come here to give you?"

Tommy asked the question burning on his mind. "You said you aren't a traditional channel. Are you an extra terrestrial?"

"This is perhaps the best description you would think to have of me."

"Have you ever been incarnate on this planet before?"

"No, I come now, to work through your split-apart, this vehicle, to bring you information and messages to help you at this time. This is a time when many of us are interested to see if this time the experiment will succeed or fail. We do have a vested interest in it. You could say at this point in your history you again have become the focus of the universe, and again for all the wrong reasons."

Maureen jumped in. "Are you talking about earth changes?"

"It is one solution to a problem out of hand."

Maureen grew slightly smug. "My guides tell me that the earth changes are mostly, if not completely, all metaphorical, as is the rising of Atlantis. Do you agree with this?"

Ki laughed, a laugh somewhere between benevolent and condescending. "This is a species which dearly loves to cling to its fairy tales. No, it is not always a guaranteed happily ever after, there is work that must be done. That is why I am here."

Maureen stuck to her guns. " Well, my channels tell me that everything will be all right in the long run."

"And they are correct. In the very long run everything will work out for the best. It depends on how attached you are to this little rock you are floating on."
